Resources

Here’s a list of books and web sites that I’ve found particularly helpful in my spiritual journey in recent years. They are not tied to any particular denomination. I add to this list periodically as I expand my library.

The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning
This should be required reading for believers! It’s a reminder that we’re all sinners in need of deep grace.

Armchair Mystic by Mark Thibodeaux
This was one of the first books introducing me to a more contemplative way of life. It showed me that prayer is a way of relating to God, not a formula.

Invitation to Solitude and Silence and Sacred Rhythms by Ruth H. Barton
These are EXCELLENT resources if you’re craving a slower, more deliberate way of living.

Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen
I could list a dozen of Nouwen’s books on this page, but this should be at the top of the list.

Spiritual Disciplines Handbook by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun
This book is a great resource for discovering different ways to read Scripture, pray, worship, and live in community with others.

50 Ways to Pray by Teresa A. Blythe
Just like the title suggests. It gives the reader different approaches for prayer, including the examen, prayer labyrinth, prayer journaling, and more.

Ignatian Spirituality
Henry Nouwen Society
Contemplative Outreach
